One of the most classic Gin cocktails is a Gin Fizz. A refreshing drink best enjoyed on a hot summers day. A “fizz” cocktail is basically a mixed variation on the sours family of cocktails. Its defining features are acidic juice and carbonated water. Effectively a fizzy gin flavoured lemonade. The Gin Fizz stems from the 19th century when soda water became widely available. Very similar to a Tom Collins which is also effectively a fizzy gin flavoured lemonade. The essential difference between a Collins’ cocktail and a fizz cocktail is the ice situation. Traditionally a fizz cocktail is served in a small glass without ice while a Tom Collins is served in a large glass with ice. A Tom Collin’s also was traditionally made with Old Tom Gin, a slightly sweeter gin.

There are variations of a Gin Fizz. If shaken with egg white it becomes a sliver fizz, if shaken with egg yolk it becomes a golden fizz, with the whole egg it is a Royal Fizz and with Champagne instead of soda water, it becomes a Diamond Fizz.
