The cosmopolitan, or cosmo, is a cocktail made with vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice and freshly squeezed lime juice. Served in a martini glass, it is often mistakenly categorised as a type of martini. A cosmopolitan is a unique drink made iconic by its bright pink colour. A trendy drink in the 90’s made even more famous by being the drink of choice for Carrie Bradshaw in the TV show Sex and the City. For the last 20 years, this cocktail has been a popular staple for many girls nights out. As a result, the drink is particularly prevalent in New York, Ohio, Provincetown, Minneapolis & San Francisco.
Similar to cranberry cooler style drink such as the Cape Codder but presented more like a kamikaze. The origin of the cocktail is disputed. Considered a more modern creation, the Cosmopolitan has a close resemblance to a Cosmopolitan cocktail published in the 1930’s. This recipe used gin instead of vodka, Cointreau, Lemon juice & Raspberry syrup.
The official IBA approved Cosmopolitan recipe calls for citrus flavoured vodka however many bartenders use a standard unflavoured vodka. A lemon twist is also sometimes used as a garnish. For the gin fans, why not swap back the vodka for gin?
- 45ml Gin
- 15ml Triple Sec
- 30ml Cranberry juice
- 10ml Lime juice
- Orange zest or lime wedge for garnish
- Cocktail shaker
- Small sieve
- Martini glass
- Add all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker
- Shake until chilled
- Strain into a Martini glass
- To make the garnish, hold a 3cm round piece of orange zest about 10cm above your cosmo and very carefully wave it over a lit match or lighter flame. Bend the outer edge of the zest in towards the flame so that the orange oils are released, then drop the zest into your drink.
